Hhag live !

Yesterday on the 14th of May, Saw our illustration group exhibiting our magazine work in the butchers market in Wrexham.

Our group Hhag ( Hillyard, Hover, Aldis and Gould ) in case you were wondering what it stood for Put up our display and started off with marking from our tutors on the Friday. Liking it and also suggesting different ways we could put it together such as poster style books it was pretty positive feedback, and from there we were all pretty positive we made the right decision in our idea.

Next Day was open to the Butchers market crowd who i must admit didn't really grasp the concept of coming in to have a look, But steadily over the day we had interest from people and a few people took some of the miniature pictures that Daisy ( Who definitely should get major props for everything she contributed to this project =D ) Printed.
Also feedback from other independent artists that were in there promoting their own work.
The major thing for me was seeing people laugh at the pictures we created and want to take some of it with them, Kind of a confidence boost i must say as I'm never convinced any thing i do people would want, but a hand full of people proved me wrong.
A small success i think a very different day of something I've never done before and would happily do it again (but on my terms of work.)

From a Review from the Hhag perspective go to Ninjhhag.wordpress.com

Well done Group once more.

Animation Lecture talk

On Thursday we were given a talk by Clair Fouquet ( ClaireFouquet.com ) a very Good animator who knows her stuff very much, Flying in or training in from Anguleme Claire spoke about herself and animations shes worked on

unfortunately i don't think their up on Youtube but they were called

' Honey have a look here. ' Short animation about a women who sees little people in every corner of her house  like a scuba diver in her drink Etc etc. Very nicely done

' Le chien Sur Le toit. ' This was a much longer one which i believe took her 4 years to complete it's about people who are ruled by black Biro's and basically if they step out of line their colours are sucked from them by these evil Biro's. Until a mass group rise up and protest against them. Was very good all done in Water colour very beautiful. also kind of rekindled my interest in becoming an animator i must admit.

Next up she pretty much told us the Major pro's Of pre production work...Scripts, Sounds, Character Desgins, A very very define storyboard that you will not change and Your Graphic bible.

As i say a very interesting talk Check out her site. admiration for any one that can talk for 4 hours or so.

Something very different and potentially very beneficial.

Ok so at the beginning of this week we were visited by some tutors from the polish school of art and design in Poland

They brought with them a new brief which is very interesting based on proverbs and linking the English proverbs to the Polish proverbs.

This will be working with the Polish/Japanese institute in Warsaw and the Academy of Art in Katowice To produce a book of illustrations using black white Grey scale and a colour of our choosing.

The proverb i was given (In the lottery.) Was

'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.'

'Miedzy, Mtotem a Kowaldlem.' (The Polish version)

Which translated Means
'Between the Hammer and the Anvil.'

So using these i can take the imagery they give and create an illustration which could be put in a book and published around the world, or at least Europe pretty exciting. Definitely need to bring my A game shall keep you posted.

Scott Campbell - Double fine.

So, being set this new brief i was scribbling through a few crappy ideas until my tutor showed me a way of creating ideas whilst doing the simplest of tasks 'Doodling.' This was alot of fun just drawing random things asking questions whilst drawing them and coming up with mini back stories and ideas.

So eventually finding the right idea i started to draw up some concepts and well these lead me to an Artist recommended to me by my tutor again.  Named 'Scott Campbell' ( Not the tutor the artist.)

looking him up i noticed a very humerous and almost simplistic to one version of his online comic labelled double fine and this seemed quite aimed at what i wanted to do (sort of.)

Either way it was nice to look at the humor is always something i like reading in any comic

Cliff Sterret

Churning across the mass amounts of Artists blogs there are out there i cam across this it was posted a while back but some one has brought the Work of Cliff Sterret and Scanned them in high res to look at

Now if im being honest i had no idea who this guy was, but looking through these i can tell he was very good at what he did

Just a few of them im kind of a fan of old style comics and drawings the novelty to me is just brilliant.

as now days its all about computers and how they can neaten things up for you easier to produce you have to appreciate how much effort went in to doing it these ways

If you want to read more of these Polly and her Pals theres loads on this website.

Ollie Stone

While searching the Creature Mag Website i came across an Illustrator named Ollie Stone.

Looking at his work it just threw how some one could get so intricate with backgrounds and not want to burn everything around him. I really hate drawing buildings I'm not gonna lie (but if the work needs it i will do it ) but to want to do it out of recreation is crazy

but i do really admire his work the tight lines and humour go very well together

i urge to have a look at his website some very good work on there

CreatureMag online

http://www.creaturemag.com/category/freak-of-the-week/

Some magazine based research.  Shall write my when my battery isn't about to die.

Hhag ...... Its not Swedish, it's a Mag.

So, forgetting i haven't blogged in a while i feel i should update.

First i shall tell you about the Magazine that our group is proposing.  Because none of us particularly wanted to write much, We chose to look at something kind of silly such as faked, headlines to illustrate.

The first initial sit down proved coming up with humerus headlines was difficult, Que e the internet. This proved that anything humerus we came up with was trumped by the real world and it's ridiculous news stories.

Researching these ( which was quite a good hour or so. ) We each picked 6 or 7 headlines and have chosen to illustrate them with which ever media we choose sticking to an A5 size.

In terms of research for this, for me it kind of seemed like the Illustration agencies that give a headline or area then collectively what they produce is put in to a book to go to possible clients.

My Contribution to the wall.
A general feel of how big the Comic was.
Towards the end the story got a bit silly to say the least.

Finally managed to get the pictures uploaded from the giant comic on Tuesday. Once again was really good fun.

Wednesday of Creative Futures

Today was probably the most interesting day so far, Both for the future plans wise and financial care wise

Getting work Experience

This was a really good talk about getting into work experience, placements and the possible chance to work abroad. Given to us by Lucy Jones and Jane Trudgill,  they talked to use about all things that could go on during academic learning and graduating.  The first i thought sounded like a real opportunity to get a proverbial foot in the door  that was looking at getting placements with a company etc... This sounded really handy and also something that could be done over the long summer period where not much happens also you could potentially get paid for it... Bonus. The next was about Working abroad for up to 13 weeks at the moment i think as it stands its only for Graduates but they said they were talking about making it for people still in learning. And well as i kept annoying my friends with i want to go to Barcelona to study.. Even though France has an amasing scene for comics i wouldn't mind going there to.

Professional Development

This was a talk from Jonathon Edwards an Illustrator / toymaker i guess now.  This was mainly him talking about the different ventures your work could possibly take you, from illustrations in magazines to making furry toys that end up being displayed in Selfridges window display in the middle of Oxford St (not to shabby.) Overall another interesting talk that pretty much states is good to have your name out there on the web some where and often alot of luck doesn't go a miss to.

Computer games - Concept art and Illustration in the entertainment Industry

Another very good talk from a very talented artist Mr Lee Carter i thought. Being shown everything that he has done he has truly inspired me to get on an try to master Photoshop because once you do you can get some truly good looking work come of iti think this mainly inspired me because like myself when he started out he had never used photoshop and now 17 years later he can 3D model make and produce things that go into the Well reknown SFX magazine... Not to shabby again.

HMRC - Working Freelance and keeping the taxman on side!

A very interesting talk given to someone who did not deserve to be in such a small room with such a loud voice this was Mr Andrew Gardner.  This was interesting to find out all the things you must be weary of when you wish to become Freelance or own your own business.

As i said a very interesting day that i have taken a lot from. Overall 100% more interesting then last years.

Tuesday of Creative Futures

Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels

This day being a graphic novelist was probably the most fun yet.  The Talk was given by the very highly known Paul Gravett and his talk was mainly about the state of the comics industry as it stands at the moment. Now this is such a huge subject and most of us think he clearly didnt have enough time to Divulge thoroughly, Which is such a shame because he had a lot of knowledge and well could of easily sat there for a few hours listening pick up artist after artist to look at.  Honestly it was ridiculous the amount of names i took out of that Talk to go and look at.  But yeah such a shame he wasn't given more time but still very interesting talk.

Later that day we missed boring lectures to Join Paul Gravett and Dan Berry to Draw a giant comic on the uni wall, this was such fun coming up with stories that are taken from the central theme. Very much based from the idea here

http://e-merl.com/pocom.htm

This is a crazy comic that has so many varients to the main story and to try to replicate something like this was a joy to work on.

(pictures of it are coming when the site allows me to upload them)

Monday of Creative Futures.

So it is that time again of the year when we have a Creative Futures week. This is when the University gets a wide range of speakers in who are professionals in their field, and we sit there in awe and pretty much wish to become them some day.

Monday

The first talk that We all had to go to was the opening Speech his was pretty much showing us figures about artists and their employment and the soon opening of the new Building, which does sound really intriguing and i personally can't wait to have a nosy around and see which new facilities i can get my hands on. Not that interesting in my opinion but it was the welcome and laying the criteria out for the first years who had not done this before.

"Passions and a Passport"
Next up was a talk from the very talented and very experienced Animator named Barry Purves. If you haven't seen his stuff before I urge you to check out his Complete works of Shakespeare in 5minutes animation really great.  Here he talked about many of his influences which was a very wide range of mediums from Puppets to Dance and even Theatre. This all helped towards movement and knowledge of the body which is something i found quite interesting as i like to draw quite figurative work and it was good to see from where you could get inspiration I do honestly which my recorder had come through so i could remember a lot more.  A very pleasant man to listen to and i took a lot out of it.

"From commercials to feature films: Life as a professional animator"
This was the next Talk i chose to attend after lunch, Although i am mainly an illustrator i have always liked 2D animation the thought of your drawings coming to life and moving around sounds really appealing. Que a talk from someone with relative experience in this Harriet Buckley who originally started off as an Illustrator and branched off into 2D animation.  This was quite interesting to hear of the Different Jobs that go towards making a feature film in this case Harriet worked on the animated film 'The Illusionist.' With a company called INK Digital a company based in Scotland. With this company they had several projects, one which included working with the Scottish Government to reduce knife crime. To be honest this wasn't to relative to what i want to do but it was interesting to hear and it could be a possible career path for me in the future.

Showreel, portfolio and CV: advice for finding work.
This was a talk given to us by Harriet Buckley again and was giving us advice on what to show in CV's aiming them towards possible employers and if you're an animator what to put in your showreel.

Over all this day although not relevant had its moments and i took something from each talk.
